Gefährliche Stoffe in der „Circular Economy“: II. Cadmium in PVC-Fensterprofilen

Im Rahmen der Circular Economy wird u. a. ein Höchstmaß an Wiederverwendung und Verwertung der in der Technosphäre befindlichen Produkte bzw. Stoffe angestrebt. Gefährliche Stoffe bzw. Chemikalien sind eines der wesentlichen Hindernisse auf dem Weg zu diesem Ziel. Anhand eines in Europa gut geregelten Elements – Cadmium – wird an verschiedenen Cadmium-haltigen Produkten untersucht, welche Kenntnisse über den Verbleib der Produkte bzw. Stoffe vorliegen und welchen Weg diese durch die Abfallwirtschaft nehmen. In Teil I haben wir uns mit Nickel-Cadmium-Akkus befasst. Im vorliegenden Teil II widmen wir uns PVC-Fensterprofilen. Die Auswertung der Statistiken zur Sammlung von PVC-Fenstern zeigt positive Trends. Die Verwendung von Recycling-PVC in neuen PVC-Fensterprofilen wird kritisch hinterfragt. Es wird eine Circular Economy für PVC und Cadmium vorgestellt. Teil III befasst sich mit dem Einsatz von Cadmium in Photovoltaik-Modulen. Mit Blick auf die drei exemplarisch untersuchten Einsatzbereiche von Cadmium ist festzustellen, dass die perspektivisch eher abnehmende Nutzung von Cadmium bei gleichzeitigem Anfall von Cadmium in nicht mehr gebrauchten Produkten eine globale Strategie zum Umgang mit diesem Element erfordert.

The circular economy concept aims at a maximum amount of re-use or recycling of products and materials from the technosphere. Hazardous compounds are among the most prominent obstacles towards this goal. Cadmium belongs to the group of strictly regulated hazardous elements. In this contribution, we collect the available knowledge about the fate of products and materials containing Cadmium and its compounds and investigate Cadmium streams entering the waste management sector. In Part I, we looked at nickel cadmium batteries. In this Part II, we are dedicated to PVC window profiles. The evaluation of statistics for the collection of PVC windows shows positive trends. The use of recycled PVC in new PVC window profiles is critically questioned. A circular economy for PVC and cadmium will be presented. Part III describes the use of cadmium in photovoltaic modules. As the use of Cadmium will probably decrease in the future while production of primary Cadmium from other non-ferrous metals is going on, a global strategy for the management of Cadmium is needed.
