Twixt Land and Sea. Ed. J. A. Berthoud, Laura L. Davis and S. W. Reid
The present volume of the Cambridge edition of the works of Joseph Conrad establishes authoritative versions of the “new but old texts” (p. xvi) of three of his Eastern seas novellas, “A Smile of Fortune”, “The Secret Sharer” and “Freya of the Seven Isles”, first published in book form in 1912 in London and New York respectively.
Conrad commenced his work on the novellas in December 1909, twenty years after his maritime service in the region, at a time following a severe crisis and breakdown before finalising Under Western Eyes. The commercial success the tales brought him therefore marks the beginning of a more fortunate period in his life.
