Tolkien and Shakespeare. Essays on Shared Themes and Language. Ed. Janet Brennan Croft

While Shakespeare has long been central to English literary criticism, the position of Tolkien is still a precarious if not marginal one. In spite of the huge success and evident cultural impact of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, books and articles about Tolkien tend to be written by fans rather than scholars and serve the communicative needs of a fan community rather than academia. We can assume that by coupling Tolkien’s name with that of the Bard, the editor and contributors of the present volume have sought to win some of that academic recognition for Tolkien which is generally accorded to Shakespeare.
