Ruskin’s Venice: The Stones Revisited. Compiled and with photographs by Sarah Quill.

Ruskin and Venice are so strongly identified with each other that confusions can arise. The Victorian critic’s presence in the Blue Guide to the city leads some of its inhabitants to believe that he is still with us; while the Venice that Ruskin celebrates can be mistaken for the modern city. Yet Ruskin remains the best guide to the labyrinthine site of his own personal journey from Evangelicalism through despair and madness to a broader acceptance of ‘Catholic’ religion. The puzzle for the student of Ruskin who also loves Venice is knowing which books to take.
