Raymond Hickey: Irish English: History and Present-day Forms

The CUP series Studies in English Language, founded by the late Sidney Greenbaum, now has a volume devoted to Irish English, entitled Irish English: History and Presentday Forms, by Raymond Hickey.
Irish English has six chapters. The Introduction (pp. 1–29) deals with numerous preliminaries such as the book’s aims and objectives (‘an overview of English in Ireland at the beginning of the twenty-first century’), and terminology, especially the muchdispu ted labels ‘Anglo-Irish’, ‘Hiberno-English’, ‘Irish English’ (also ‘Northern Irish English’ and ‘English in Northern Ireland’) – even the term ‘Irish’ itself. It introduces attitudes and perceptions with regard to the identity of Irish English.
