Kunststoffe in der Umwelt – umfassend betrachtet

Im Auftrag der BKV GmbH, dem Kompetenzcenter der deutschen Kunststoffindustrie, ist mit Unterstützung mehrerer Kunststoffverbände erstmalig ein umfassender Modellansatz zur Erfassung landbasierter, nicht ordnungsgemäß entsorgter Kunststoffabfälle entstanden. Der vor Kurzem vorgelegte Bericht „Kunststoffe in der Umwelt“ ergänzt das bereits vor Jahren entwickelte und seitdem immer wieder aktualisierte Modell „Vom Land ins Meer – Modell zur Erfassung landbasierter Kunststoffabfälle“, das die Einträge von Deutschland aus in die Nord- und Ostsee sowie in das Schwarze Meer analysiert. Mit derselben methodischen Herangehensweise, mit der Haupteintragspfade und -quellen für Kunststoffe systematisch erfasst, strukturiert und quantitativ beschrieben werden, analysiert „Kunststoffe in der Umwelt“ Einträge von Kunststoffabfällen und deren Verbleib sowohl in der terrestrischen als auch in der aquatischen Umwelt. Mit den darin angelegten Schnittstellen zum Modell „Vom Land ins Meer“ wie auch zu der bekannten umfassenden Studie „Stoffstrombild Kunststoffe in Deutschland“ kann die BKV nun ein einzigartiges Gesamtbild für den Lebensweg von Kunststoffen in Deutschland präsentieren: Daten und Fakten zu Produktion, Verarbeitung, Verbrauch und Verwertung können nun mit Daten zu Eintrag und Verbleib nicht ordnungsgemäß entsorgter Kunststoffabfälle in die terrestrische und aquatische Umwelt bis hin zu Einträgen in die Meere ergänzt werden.

On behalf of BKV GmbH, the competence centre of the German plastics industry, and with the support of several plastics associations, a comprehensive model approach for the collection of land-based, improperly disposed plastic waste has been developed for the first time. The recently presented report „Plastics in the Environment“ complements the model „From Land to Sea – Model for the Documentation of Land-based Plastic Litter“, which was developed years ago and has been updated repeatedly since then, and which analyses the inputs from Germany into the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Using the same methodological approach, which systematically records, structures and quantitatively describes the main input pathways and sources of plastics, „Plastics in the Environment“ analyses inputs of plastic waste and their fate in both the terrestrial and aquatic environment. With its interfaces to the model „From Land to Sea“ as well as to the well-known comprehensive study „Material Flow Diagram Plastics in Germany“, the BKV can now present a unique overall picture of the life cycle of plastics in Germany: Data and facts on production, processing, consumption and recycling can now be supplemented with data on the input and fate of improperly disposed plastic waste in the terrestrial and aquatic environment, including inputs into the oceans.
