Krieg und Romankrise: Ernst Jüngers Erzählung „Sturm“

Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit Jüngers früher Novelle „Sturm“, die Ereignisse des Ersten Weltkriegs behandelt. Die neue Lektüre stellt den Text in den Zusammenhang der Krise des Erzählens, welche die Romandiskussion des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts bestimmte. Damit verschiebt sie den Schwerpunkt von der Kriegshandlung zur Beziehung zwischen dem Ersten Weltkrieg als Zivilisationsbruch und der Zukunft des fiktionalen Erzählens. Besonderes Gewicht erhalten die drei eingeschobenen Erzählungen, die von der Hauptfigur als Experiment vorgetragen werden. Sie sind Teil des Kunstgesprächs, durch das sich die Figuren der Novelle gegen den Krieg abgrenzen und zugleich die zukünftigen Möglichkeiten der Kunst diskutieren. Die Deutung legt den Nachdruck auf die Paradoxie, dass der Tod des Helden und die Zerstörung seiner Skizzen, indem sie erzählt werden, auf eine Rettung des Erzählens hinauslaufen. Jüngers Erzählung bewältigt also die Krise des Erzählens, indem sie diese zu ihrem Gegenstand macht.

This essay examines Jünger’s early short story “Sturm”, which deals with the trench warfare of World War I. The interpretation places the work in the larger context of the crisis of the novel, which dominated the literary discussion of the early 20th century. This shift changes the focus of the reading from the narrated events to the relationship between the war as a major cultural break and the future of fictional narratives. Special attention is given to the three stories told by the hero as part of the literary and aesthetic discussions among the main characters. These stories within the story are presented as experiments that explore the future of fictional narratives. My reading emphasizes the final scene, in which the death of the hero and the destruction of his manuscripts are the paradoxical means of rescuing them for posterity. In short, Jünger’s “Sturm” overcomes the crisis of literature by making this crisis the object of the narrative.
