Kathryn Jacobs: Marriage Contracts from Chaucer to the Renaissance Stage.

This short survey of relations between literature and the practices, laws, and expectations which governed marriage in England from the late fourteenth to the early seventeenth centuries proposes an important subject. Jacobs crosses genres and centuries, compares court cases and courtly writing. Perhaps because her scope is so large, however, the final effect is unsatisfactory, even disjointed.
