The contribution traces the fortunes of Erwin Magnus, who established himself as the most prolific translator of Jack London into German in the first half of the twentieth century. After having gained considerable wealth through his work, Magnus was forced to emigrate from Nazi Germany and died in poverty in a Copenhagen hospital in 1947. The article pays special attention to the women who preceded and accompanied Magnus as translators of London, while also detailing his family’s quarrels with German publishers over the profits made from his translations.
