Ian Cooper: The Near and Distant God. Poetry, Idealism and Religious Thought from Hölderlin to Eliot

Given the heavily discussed presence of religious themes in modern poetry, the number of studies of modern poetry which take religion as their starting point is striking ly little. Previous studies of modern poetry and religion have tended to focus on the spiritual biographies of individual authors, an approach which not only assumes a correlation between a poet’s confession and the treatment of religious themes in his poetry, but also disregards the wider intellectual and philosophical context of his work. The apparent reluctance to take seriously the theological concerns of modern poetry constitutes a significant gap in research on modern literature.
