Exploring strategies to reduce particle concentrations – Results of the research project PAREST

Though many different measures to reduce air pollution have been implemented in the past years, still air quality objectives are exceeded in many places in Germany, especially in urban areas, where traffic is a major source of pollutants. High air pollutant concentrations have negative effects on human health and the natural environment. In order to protect people and the environment, additional measures need to be introduced. The research project “Particle Reduction Strategies – PAREST”, initiated by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA), examines a range of possible additional policies and measures to improve air quality and evaluates these measures with chemical transport models (CTM). The analysis also considers the cost effectivity of measures.
