Exil in Positano.

Hauptmann’s poem “Positano” (1946) was written in 1944 as a memorial to the Germanspeaking popular author Essad Bey (1905-1942). Born as Lew Nussimbaum in Baku, the son of Jewish parents converted to Islam and strove to achieve a literary apotheosis of the Orient under conservative auspices. Hauptmann learned about the predicament of the author, who was seriously ill in his exile in Positano, from the journalist G. S. Viereck and arranged for the support of Pima Andreae. The second second part of his poem refers to these events, whereas the first juxtaposes Essad Bey’s paradoxical identity to the mysterious fate of Valerie von Mangold, who had accompanied Hauptmann on his visit to Positano in 1897.
