The relationship between Paul Celan’s poetry and Theodor W. Adorno’s aesthetic theory is inextricably linked with the question of whether and how literature is possible after Auschwitz. Taking this as its starting point, the article analyses how Adorno’s aporetic forms of representation find their correspondence in Celan’s poem “Engführung”. Both the philosophy of art and poetry recognise the real violence of the catastrophe without expunging the moment of utopia. No sovereign spirit can do more to overcome the extreme contradiction.
