Elizabeth I: Always Her Own Free Woman. Ed. Carole Levin, Jo Eldridge Carney, and Debra Barrett-Graves.

This anthology, one of several to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth I, contains twelve essays developed from conferences of the Shakespeare Association of America and of Sixteenth Century Studies. The book is interdisciplinary, expressing the views and methods of historians, cultural critics, and literary scholars; most are from the United States, twelve women and four men. Each of four parts has three essays, with an “Introduction” by the editors and an evaluative “Afterword” by Janel Mueller. As the subtitle indicates, the common theme is Elizabeth’s effort to achieve and maintain authority in spite of complicating gender ideologies; the contexts vary, but the emphasis is political.
