David Crystal: Pronouncing Shakespeare: The Globe Experiment.

In June 2004 Shakespeare’s Globe presented three “original pronunciation” performances of Romeo and Juliet. Since no one had undertaken to historicize the sound of Shakespeare’s text since John Barton’s Julius Caesar for the Marlowe Society in 1952, some Globe directors and administrators had from time to time considered such an experiment, proposing to place pronunciation under the rubric of “original practices,” along with all-male companies and historically accurate musical instruments. But the Globe management feared that a full run of a play spoken as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men might have delivered it would prove unintelligible and scare off the customers.
