Die Figuration einer antimetaphysischen Universalität bei Walter Benjamin

Diese Studie untersucht Benjamins frühe Denkfigur des Ausdruckslosen und hebt hervor, dass das Ausdruckslose nicht als eine rein ästhetische Kategorie, sondern als radikale Kritik an der Metaphysik fungiert. Während der schöne Schein mit Vollkommenheit, Harmonie und Totalität einhergeht, macht das Ausdruckslose das Unvollkommene und das Bruchstückhafte sichtbar. Im Gegensatz zum Schönen, das von der Annahme der Totalität ausgeht, evoziert das Ausdruckslose eine Theorie der Unvollständigkeit, welche die Einheit als Überschuss auffasst.

This article examines Benjamin’s early concept of the expressionless and stresses that the expressionless functions not only as an aesthetic category, but also as a radical criticism of metaphysics. While a beautiful appearance is associated with perfection, harmony and totality, the expressionless draws attention to the imperfect and the fragmentary. The aesthetics of a beautiful appearance assumes the totality of reality, whereas the aesthetics of the expressionless assumes a theory of incompleteness, which conceives of unity an additional factor not included in the sum of all parts.
