Das Alte und das Neue: Ambivalenz und Eindeutigkeit in Theodor Fontanes Roman „Der Stechlin“

Der Beitrag untersucht die spezifische Verschränkung formaler und inhaltlicher Elemente im „Stechlin“ im Hinblick auf ihre Aussagefunktion im Roman. Dabei werden ambivalente Strukturen der Erzähltechnik fokalisiert (semantische Proliferation und Relativierung; Kontrastierung von Konversation und defizitärer Kommunikation) und hieraus resultierende dominante Positionen im kulturellen Kontext verortet, mit besonderem Bezug auf die zeitgenössischen Auseinandersetzungen innerhalb des Protestantismus in Preußen.

This article examines the peculiar blend of elements of form and content in “Der Stechlin” with regard to their significance in the novel. It focuses on the ambivalent structures of the narrative technique (semantic proliferation and relativisation; contrast of conversation and communication deficits), and locates the dominant positions resulting from these in their cultural context, especially in the contemporary protestant debate in Prussia.
