D. H. Lawrence: The Virgin and the Gipsy and Other Stories. Ed. Michael Herbert, Bethan Jones and Lindeth Vasey (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of D. H. Lawrence). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005. Pp. lvii + 334. Cloth £ 70.00.

The Virgin and the Gipsy and Other Stories collects the tales not so far re-edited in the Cambridge Edition, all of them written between January 1926 and July 1928. The Virgin and the Gipsy was first published posthumously in Florence in 1930 by Lawrence’s friend “Pino” Orioli, who in 1928 had brought out the private edition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and later the same year by Martin Secker in London. The more controversial story, The Escaped Cock, appeared first 1929 in Paris (Black Sun Press) and in 1930, under the title The Man Who Died, in London (Martin Secker). The other stories collected here were included in the volume The Lovely Lady, published by Secker in 1933.
