D. H. Lawrence: Paul Morel. Ed. Helen Baron (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of D. H. Lawrence).

Like most of D. H. Lawrence’s novels, Sons and Lovers, his first major critical success, had gone through several stages before it eventually reached print. While in many cases these preliminary trials or drafts have not survived, in others they are still extant and can justly be described as early versions. In the case of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, they have attained the status of self-contained novels in their own right and have even been published as paperbacks. The editors of the Cambridge Edition of Lawrence have, I think, rightly decided that some of these texts merit inclusion in their project, although they do not, of course, conform to the criteria announced in the general editors’ preface (“provide texts which are as close as can now be determined to those which Lawrence would have wished to see printed”, p. ix).
