Cecilia A. Hatt: God and the Gawain-Poet. Theology and Genre in Pearl, Cleanness, Patience and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
That theology is a vital, living concern for the Gawain-poet should be a truism, but his critics have not always taken him seriously in that regard. This study, although far from perfect, is welcome as a bracing attempt to correct that oversight. In particular, Hatt argues that the poet’s commitment to theology is what determines his approach to genre in each poem.
