Brian Cummings: The Literary Culture of the Reformation: Grammar and Grace.

Grammar and Grace, the subtitle of Brian Cummings’ impressive study, which has recently been reissued as a paperback, is a better indicator of its concerns than the main title. Cummings focuses on the controversies regarding justification by faith (sola fides) that swirled through the Continent and England from the invention of printing through the writings of John Donne, including a coda on Milton’s Paradise Lost (1674). Cummings’ aim is at once to examine “the complex cultural processes of writing” and especially to cast light on the involvement of grammar in this process.
