The book under review appeared on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Helmut Gneuss who held the Chair for English Language and Medieval English Literature at the University of Munich from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. Gneuss supervised the dissertations of all the ten contributors. The book, thus, presents the papers of an ingroup often quoting and praising its master from beginning to end of their respective contributions in a way that, for the festschriftee, must sometimes border on the embarrassing.
