Autorbilder in volkssprachigen Handschriften des Mittelalters. Eine Problemskizze.

In dieser Problemskizze, die eine charakteristische Auswahl von Autorbildern in deutschsprachigen Handschriften des 13.–15. Jahrhunderts versammelt, geht es vornehmlich um die Frage, was ein Bild zum Autorbild macht und – vor allem am Beispiel der Autorbilder in der Überlieferung bestimmter Werke des Rudolf von Ems – welche Funktion solchen Autorbildern in der handschriftlichen Tradierung der volkssprachigen Literatur zukommt.

This article outlines the problems surrounding author portraits in 13th to 15th century German manuscripts in comparison with French ones. It is based on a representative selection of portraits and focuses on two questions: 1. What is necessary for a picture to be regarded as a portrait of an author? 2. With reference to the works of Rudolf von Ems in particular, what was the purpose of these pictures in the manuscript tradition of vernacular literature?
