Arthurian Literature XXXVI: Sacred Space and Place in Arthurian Romance. Ed. Sarah Bowden, Susanne Friede and Andreas Hammer (Arthurian Literature, 36). Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 2021.

This instalment in D. S. Brewer’s Arthurian Literature series sees eight contributors approach the theme of sacred spaces and places in Arthurian romance. The so-called “spatial turn,” a theoretical perspective focused on the human relationship with space and championed by human geographers such as Yi-Fu Tuan and Doreen Massey, has inspired valuable research in medieval studies over the past two decades. This has ranged from historical scholarship on the real-world spaces of the Middle Ages to enquiries into literary spaces, as well as the points of intersection between the two.
