Applikation: Eine nützliche Kategorie für die empirische Erforschung der Rezeption literarischer Texte. Am Beispiel der Erstrezeption von Goethes „Stella“

Der Beitrag erläutert den Begriff der Applikation literarischer Texte. Anders als in der traditionellen Hermeneutik wird darunter eine Kategorie für die empirische Erforschung einer Form des Umgangs mit Literatur verstanden, bei der Rezipienten Gehalte des Textes mit ihrer Erfahrungswirklichkeit in Beziehung setzen, um lebensweltlich relevante Einsichten zu erlangen. Am Beispiel der zeitgenössischen Rezeption von Goethes „Stella“ (1776) soll demonstriert werden, dass ‚Applikation‘ eine wichtige und bisher nicht hinreichend beachtete Kategorie ist, um in literaturgeschichtlicher Perspektive den außerwissenschaftlichen Umgang mit literarischen Texten empirisch zu untersuchen. Quellen zur Erstrezeption von „Stella“ legen nahe, dass und wie die Zeitgenossen versuchten, eine Applikation des Dramas vorzunehmen. Eine Analyse des Dramas zeigt, welches Applikationspotenzial der Text plausiblerweise haben konnte.

This article explains the concept of the application of literary texts. In contrast to traditional hermeneutics, ‘application’ is understood as a category for the empirical research of a way of treating literature in which recipients relate elements of the text to their own experience of reality in order to gain insights relevant to the world they live in. The example of the contemporary reception of Goethe’s “Stella” (1776) is used to show that ‘application’ is an important category which has hitherto not been sufficiently utilised in literary historians’ empirical investigations into the use of literary texts beyond the scholarly sphere. Sources on the initial reception of “Stella” suggest that Goethe’s contemporaries tried to undertake an application of the drama and how they did this. An analysis of the drama shows the potential for application that the text could plausibly have.
