A History of the English Language. Ed. Richard Hogg and David Denison.

A History of the English Language is not, as its title, publisher or authors might suggest, an offshoot of the 6-volume Cambridge History of the English Language, but an independent book geared at senior undergraduates and “the general reader”. Although covering the development of English from the earliest records to the present day, the approach of the book is thematic and its emphasis is definitely on the later periods and very much on variation, on different Englishes.
